Pae Huarahi
Pae Huarahi is a community-grown, workforce initiative led and designed by whānau hauā/tāngata whaikaha or whānau experiencing disabilities. It has been developed for the health, disability and social sectors with support from Te Roopu Waiora, iwi and kaupapa Māori services. This initiative offers two pathways:
Whānau-led. Practically useful.
Our Indigenous response to the challenge of being inclusive
Lived Experience
Real stories, insights and solutions from the whānau hauā community
Mātauranga Māori
Traditional well-researched cultural knowledge integrated into modern practice
Practical, useful skills
Evidence-based approaches that work in real-world settings
Our Story
Pae Huarahi was first conceived in the 1990s after visiting Indigenous wellbeing services in South Dakota and Hawai’i. Around the world disability populations struggle to be included. Since then, we have researched and developed a whānau hauā response to support Hauora services improve their reach and delivery to our communities here at home. Pae Huarahi is a practical, collective approach, grounded in Te Ao Māori from the lived experience of our members. Welcome to our space and the opportunity to partner with us. Nā te whānau, me te whānau, ka whakatū tahi
